eMindful Study Finds 54 Percent of Employees With Metabolic Syndrome Reverse Condition Through Company’s Metabolic and Weight Programs — In Time For Holiday Season eMindful Offers Holiday Eating Class

Vero Beach, FL – Dec. 2, 2015—eMindful, the leading provider of mindfulness programs for employers, today reported research showing dramatic improvements from its metabolic and weight management programs.

A sample of more than 1,200 employees from the U.S. and abroad showed that 54.4 percent of those who met criteria for metabolic syndrome at the start of the course no longer met criteria after the course. Metabolic syndrome is defined as a condition in which a person has clinical metrics outside of the normal range in three of the following five categories: triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, blood pressure, and waist circumference. Together these increase a person’s risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

One factor contributing to this improvement was that three measures of physical exercise all rose by 25 percent or more. Participants also experienced a 13.6 percent reduction in stress, measured using the validated Perceived Stress Scale. And quality of life, measured with self-reported indicators of overall health, physical pain and personal energy, showed an improvement of more than 30 percent. Other areas of improvement included workplace productivity and sleep habits.

“The wide range of benefits from the metabolic and weight balance courses speak to the broad efficacy of mindfulness which has been supported by extensive scientific research over the past ten to 15 years,” said Ruth Q. Wolever, PhD, eMindful’s Chief Scientific Officer and Associate Professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Wolever also is co-author of new book, The Mindful Diet.

“Employers looking for improvements such as these in the resiliency and well-being of their employees are far more likely to find them in evidence-based programs supported by this kind of research rigor.”

This holiday season eMindful is making available to the public a course called Mindfulness Skills To Help Beat Holiday Eating and Stress. It is designed to help people stay on track with weight goals during the challenging holiday period which is full of traditional foods, extended social eating engagements, holiday commitments and less time to exercise.
