Yoga instructor Kim Leibowitz and physical therapist Jennifer Hays, team up in this workshop designed to help people who experience chronic pain. You will learn yoga techniques and other physical movement tips that offer relief and cultivate a greater ease of moving through your daily life. A gentle style of yoga is adapted to increase range of motion, flexibility in the joints and connective tissues, and muscle awareness. Students will also learn postures to practice at home and how to work with the mind, body and breath to ease pain and reduce stress. Discover how pain in one part of the body may be originating from someplace completely different and how to determine the trigger point of origin in order to finally alleviate that pain.
Instructors:
Kim Leibowitz, RYT-200, teaches Hatha yoga at Glenmore Yoga and Wellness Center in Richmond, Virginia and leads workshops in studio and online. Kim developed Glenmore’s Yoga for Chronic Pain program based on her personal experience with chronic pain and how yoga can mediate its effects. She has struggled with fibromyalgia for over 20 years and has found significant mental and physical relief through yoga. Kim first came to the mat in 2001 after years of trying many unsuccessful remedies to ease muscle and joint pain and fatigue. Now she is committed to helping others find significant pain relief through yoga. Kim is a certified 200 hour instructor and a registered member of Yoga Alliance. She is also a marketing consultant and graduate-level adjunct professor at VCU’s Center for Sport Leadership.
Jennifer M. Hays, MPT is a physical therapist at Orthopedic Physical Therapy, Inc. in Richmond, Virginia. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1997 and a Master of Physical Therapy degree from Shenandoah University in 2000. She specializes in the treatment of patients with TMJ/TMD, craniofacial pain and headaches. In addition, she has advanced training in manual therapy techniques, craniosacral therapy, osteoporosis and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction of the shoulder, spine and pelvic girdle.

Workshop Description: This profound two-hour workshop is designed to take the mystery out of the ancient discipline of yoga and introduce elemental postures, alignment principles and breathing techniques. Using clear detailed instruction, we will explore the the types of postures including standing, sitting and balance poses; the benefits they offer and include a discussion on how to modify or use props to allow for any limits in range of motion or flexibility. The workshop will end with a deep relaxation.
The benefits of a regular Yoga practice include increased strength, flexibility, balance and stamina; improved circulation, digestion, respiration and regulation of blood pressure; relief from insomnia, chronic tension and stress; and a strengthened immune system. Introduction to Yoga will help you develop your personal yoga practice so that you will feel comfortable participating in classes, setting you on the path of health, well-being and renewed vitality.

Yoga for Busy People

Workshop Description: In this powerful, two-hour workshop you will learn a variety of simple techniques that you can use throughout your busy day to improve your physical, mental and emotional state. This is an ALL LEVELS class and no previous yoga experience is necessary. First we will teach simple warm up exercises you can do any time to create flexibility and relieve stress and pain in your neck, shoulders, back and wrists. This is great for people who work at desks, computers or spend time driving a car. Discover and practice chair exercises that are easy, fun and powerful. Find out how you can dramatically increase the energy you have during the day without caffeine. You will leave the workshop feeling refreshed and alive. You will learn a variety of techniques that you can immediately apply in your daily life to maintain balance and harmony.
