Mindfulness for the Adolescent: A Class for Teens
Course Information

Why should I take this class?

“I am so stressed out! I need some help! I have too much to deal with!  My head is always racing.  I keep thinking about the past or the future.”

If this is you, then you are perfect for this class.  As a teen today, stressors are crazy and they come from all directions: parents, friends, teachers, coaches... even yourself! And they're about all kinds of things: school, relationships, the way one looks... it all can be really overwhelming.

Taking a minute to be here, right now and not always “up in your head” can reduce both mental and physical problems.  How do we know this?  Hundreds of teens with problems like the ones above have been through this program and come out feeling a whole lot better about themselves and about life in general.  They feel less stressed out and more positive about how to approach difficult situations.  This class isn’t about "poor me", it's about utilizing what you already have within you - your own inner strength - that you may not even know about.

What will I learn in this class?

This class will give you an entire toolbox of skills to approach almost all stressful situations.  We will do things you probably haven’t done before like meditate!  No, it doesn’t mean you will have no thoughts (a myth lots of people have) it is more about noticing and paying attention in the moment.  We will talk about how to be in our bodies, not in our heads. Or, if we are in our heads, how to be there in a different way... instead of being our thoughts and giving a lot of power to them.  You will learn about how to stop judging yourself or being mean to yourself.  We will talk about taking time out for you without being selfish.  You will get familiar with how to let go of physical and emotional pain and how to be with pain without adding to it.  These are just a few of the multitude of things you will learn.  This is a chance to have some fun, do something different, and feel better and less stressed out about you.

Intro to Mindfulness for the Adolescent for Professionals
Course Information

What is the Four Hour Introduction to Mindfulness for Adolescents for Professionals?

This is a hands-on workshop for those who work with adolescents in a therapeutic, hospital or educational setting. It is an introductory opportunity to learn more about working with and approaching teens through the lense of mindfulness. The workshop will be a mixture of both experiential practices and curriculum exercises both specific to the teen population. Experiential practice will include both formal and informal mindful meditations tailored for the adolescent audience. Curriculum exercises will include various examples and tools to use with teens. These aspects of the curriculum will be explained in detail so that you may then use these practices with teens themselves after completing the workshop. The workshop is meant for those who are already familiar with Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and wish to learn more about an adapted version with adolescents. This is an overview of the program used in research, with statistically significant findings, done by Gina Biegel, MA, LMFT. Click here to view the abstract on this research.
