Mindfulness-Based Conflict Resolution (MBCR) Course Information

What is MBCR?

Conflicts within groups and businesses are commonly perceived and addressed as adversarial, isolated negative problems to resolve quickly. Although that may be successful in terms of negotiating surface gains and losses, the underlying causes of conflict aren't deemed relevant or necessary to explore. However, if the broader picture of what caused conflict to erupt in the first place isn't brought into the open, the likelihood of problems rising again are high. When disempowering policies or destructive behaviors aren't replaced with more civil, effective, and inclusive ones, the inner and outer status quo continues, the company tribe suffers - and so does its customers.

The price of ignoring the realities of workplace conflict, as well as not training both employees and their supervisors in mindful, civil and humane methods of interaction, conflict resolution and respectful coexistence is so great, it simply cannot be dismissed or considered an unnecessary or frivolous expense – even in these challenging economic times when budgets are being slashed and trainings are being shelved. Prevention is much more cost-effective and empowering than cleaning up messes after the fact - and sometimes the damage to both individual and team morale and productivity is irreparable as well as financially devastating.

Mindfulness-Based Conflict Resolution (MBCR) can result in a more cooperative, civil and humane environment in which all parties are more likely to realize their true individual potential as well as work together more effectively and creatively. By learning mindful techniques and practices to approach conflict and communication challenges, all parties can proactively - instead of reactively – transform conflict into opportunity for individual and collective growth, which will extend outward to all aspects of their lives and result in less stress and greater overall well being and happiness.

Course Objectives:

• illustrate the costs poor communication and conflict have upon individuals and tribes; reframing conflict as an opportunity

• explain how deliberate mindfulness trains our mind and brain to move from unconscious reaction to focused pro-action

• convey the contagious “ripple effect” impact of our thoughts, choices, actions and behaviors upon others, and the need for personal accountability and transparency

• using deliberate mindfulness to engage in self-directed neuroplasticity with eight areas of human intelligence

• how empathy, compassion, assertiveness, honesty, apology and forgiveness work together

• explain why Mindfulness-Based Conflict Resolution (MBCR) empowers both individuals and tribes in both the present and future

• offer specific Mindfulness-Based tools and techniques for preventing and diffusing conflict, individually and in group situations
