Mindful Awareness Program for ADHD Course Information

What is MAPs for ADHD?

Attention is a doorway into our experience and a foundational quality of our awareness. Where we place our attention or how often distractions grab our attention determines the quality of our daily experiences, our relationships with ourselves and others, and how we cope with daily challenges. The connection between attention and well-being is often illustrated through a condition called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and through the benefits of an approach called mindfulness training. For adults with ADHD, mindfulness training helps mitigate many of the effects of ADHD symptoms through enhanced self-awareness and self-regulation. Using mindfulness as a tool, adults with ADHD can develop better ability to manage distractibility, emotional ups and downs, and self-defeating thoughts and actions. For parents of children with ADHD, mindfulness helps dealing with daily stressors more easily, encourages handling problems with openness and flexibility of thought, and, when coupled with ADHD education, to structure a household in ways that foster independence in children with attention problems.

Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs) for ADHD* is a 6-week program, taught by Lidia Zylowska, M.D. and Mark Bertin, M.D., which provides an overview of ADHD and trains mindfulness meditation. The class discusses the science of ADHD, along with meditation's impact on the brain and attention regulation. Mindfulness exercises are taught in a gradual way, suitable for those with attentional difficulties and/or new to meditation. The class also includes education into the impact of ADHD and executive function skills on day-to-day life. Adults with ADHD, spouses of ADHD adults, parents of children with ADHD, teachers, or clinicians working with ADHD individuals will also benefit from the class by learning basic mindfulness skills for themselves and a mindful and compassionate approach to ADHD.

*MAPS for ADHD was co-developed by Zylowska and Smalley with contributions from Diana Winston.  See Zylowska, L et al, J of Attention Disorders, 2000.
