Michael Silverman, Ed.D. to Teach:

"Authenticity: Becoming the Person You Want to Be"

Michael bioDr. Michael Silverman, a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, will begin teaching Authenticity: Becoming the Person You Want to Be beginning in late March 2007. Dr. Silverman, who has been teaching courses in authenticity since 2000, offers, "The Authenticity Class addresses the needs of people whose self-perceptions block their actions to relate successfully with others.  The obstacles to genuineness have come from patterns of negative self-belief, nervous expectation, powerlessness, embarrassment, and disappointment. The result is a negative spin of comparison, self-rejection, and pessimistic performance expectation."

The purpose of Authenticity: Becoming the Person You Want to Be is to improve self-confidence, through self-acceptance and optimistic performance expectations, to "re-invent" oneself as the person one wants to be. The live class with Dr. Silverman is highly interactive and encourages genuine introspection and sharing that leads to positive, honest, and realistic interactions... as I really am.  More information can be found here:

About the eMindful Eating course

Have you ever eaten food...but not tasted it?  Gone on diet after diet only to find none of them "work"?  eMindful is now offering a supportive, ongoing class in Mindful Eating.

In the Mindful Eating class you will meet other people having the same struggles with food and weight.  We offer a way to create a healthy relationship to food.  We examine who is in control...you or the food.  Wouldn't it be nice to stop fixating on food and weight and...relax?

Every course I see these days advertises it will tell you its "secrets".  I'm going to tell you the eMindful Eating class secret right here: losing weight permanently and maintaining your body's natural, healthy weight, means creating some new habits and changing some old habits.  A habit is something we do naturally; without thinking much about it.  Of course it doesn't mean we have to do it mindlessly.  Do you "choose" to brush your teeth every morning?  Well, in a sense you do - you don't do it autonomically.  But would you actually "choose" not to brush your teeth?  Probably not.  It's a habit.

I'm going to tell you another horrible, awful secret that will probably make you stop reading right here...changing habits doesn't happen overnight.  In fact, weight loss doesn't happen overnight.  And while you may lose weight on a diet, it won't stay off unless you stay on the diet.  It does not matter what the diet, exercise machine, herbal remedy, pill or surgery promises you.  I'm sorry if I'm the first to tell you that, and if you still believe in the tooth fairy, send me a tooth and I'll send you a quarter.  J

Well now, if you're still reading, I have some good news.  New habits can be created.  It turns out your brain is still capable of creating new neural pathways; you just need to give it a chance!  I started using the practices used by mindful eaters a few years ago, and with my new habits I make enjoyable and healthy choices 98% of the time.  Occasionally, one of my old habits sneaks up on me.  J  But here's the way my life has changed: each morning I begin the day by choosing some I want to eat and eating as much of it as my body needs (and, it turns out, as much as I want).  As the day progresses, when I feel hungry, I eat...whatever I want.  I don't weigh or measure.  I don't obsess.  In fact, food is not a central part of my life anymore.  It doesn't consume me.  There was a time, not too many years ago, that I wore a size 24.  Now I wear a comfortable size 12 (actually, depending on the brand, it varies, but 12 is very common...and any time I can fit into clothing that's a size 8...I automatically buy it...habits...) and I never diet.  So, I'm not "Twiggy", but I'm no longer obese.  Oh, by the way, I'm almost 5'7".  And I'm perfectly happy with the way I look...in fact, if I stop to think about it, I'm downright proud.

Changing an old habit is probably the hardest thing to do.  Donald Altman told a story of a man he knew who was told by his doctor he had to change what he ate or he was in grave danger of developing Type II Diabetes.  Donald asked him what he was going to do.  "Change doctors, of course."

The eMindful Eating subscription offers a step-by-step guide to changing your relationship with food.  It's taught by people who've "been there, done that" and who care about your struggle.  Each week offers new concepts, and activities to support those concepts.  Eating mindfully can be fun!  And we encourage you to notice your feelings and explore what it is you want in life, that you're not getting in food.

And, as my friend, Abbe Breiter says, "I hope you have a mindfully delicious day!"
